Growing up inside the aviation industry, Rob Sherry was able to see all the behind-the-scenes efforts put into making each trip successful. The orchestration between each department is something most people don’t get to see, but when Sherry saw that, it drew him to pursue a career in the industry.
“The general aviation industry alone, there’s no such thing as a common day and that’s what I like about it,” he said.
Sherry is general manager of the Hawthorne Global Aviation’s Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) FBO. He got the position when he was 25 years old after spending most of his life in the private aviation industry.
His first job in aviation was cleaning airplanes, while he was still in school. From servicing the lavatory of a jet to detailing the leading edges on the tail of a Gulfstream, Sherry learned firsthand how much every detail matters in creating a successful trip for a client.
At age 21, he worked with the general manager to launch the FBO at ISP. Shortly after that he took on the role of assistant director of safety and security for private jet firm ExcelAire, as well as the FBO’s line service manager.
As general manager of Hawthorne Global’s Islip FBO, he has increased transient sales by 100 percent. In addition, he has won multiple contracts with large charter companies, Part 91 flight departments and recently was awarded an airline above and below wing contract.
Sherry is dedicated to the aviation industry and to raising awareness for careers in aviation on Long Island. He has visited with local technical schools and their administrators to update them on the many opportunities in aviation. He has been a member of National Air Transportation Association (NATA) and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) for the last 10 years, and active participant in annual and regional events. During the rare occasion of down time he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children.
