For Trevor Laue, it all began with an inflatable toy airplane. “When I was a little kid, a circus came to town and there were inflatable toys for sale. I wanted the airplane one, but my Dad first said no because he thought it wouldn’t last,” he said. “I still have that toy today.”
It went from there for Laue, who started playing with flight simulators. But after high school, he didn’t know what he wanted to do, so he took a six-week trip to Alaska with his father. “While I was there, I got to fly with a bush pilot and a family friend,” he said.
After that trip, Laue knew he wanted to work in aviation. He ended up at Chatham Municipal Airport working at the front desk and serving as a lineman. In the past four years, he has obtained his private pilot and commercial license, his tailwheel sign off, his multi-engine land pilot license and his airframe and power plant technician license.
He wears many hats at the airport, including a mechanic at Stick’N Rudder Aero Maintenance, assistant airport manager at the Cape Cod Flying Circus and one of two of the Waco bi-plane sightsee tour pilots at Stick’N Rudder Aero Tours. He also flies for New England Specialized Aviation Services performing right whale surveys and flies Great White Shark search flights for the Atlantic Great White Shark Conservatory.
Laue coordinates the city’s annual Planes, Trains, and Automobiles Open House, and the Chatham Municipal Airport 4th of July Parade Float. And he mentors young high school and college interns at the airport.
