Volo Aviation LLC has been awarded a contract to manage the FBO at MidCoast Regional Airport at Wright Army Airfield (KLHW) in Hinesville, Ga.
As manager, Volo Aviation will oversee all facets of the airport’s civilian aviation operations effective Dec. 16. Conveniently located 35 miles southwest of Savannah, MidCoast Regional Airport is a joint public- and military-use airport within Fort Stewart.
The facility is a joint public- and military-use airport within Fort Stewart and is governed by a Joint Management Board (JMB) comprised of representatives from the United States Army and civilian joint-venture partners the Liberty County Board of Commissioners, the City of Hinesville and the Liberty County Development Authority.
“We are very pleased to begin working in Coastal Georgia,” says Brian Ciambra, Volo Aviation’s Senior Vice President for FBO Operations. “By leveraging our FBO experience and market knowledge, we are very confident that we can assist the Joint Management Board in achieving its goal of enhancing the customer experience while increasing operations and fuel sales at this location.”
MidCoast Regional Airport General Manager Charlie Martin and his team will remain on staff at MidCoast, which has two 5,000-foot runways and 24 based aircraft.
Constructed in 1942 and known then as the Camp Stewart Army Airfield, the airport has historically served as training grounds for armor and anti-aircraft artillery units. In 1959, the post became a permanent US Army facility and its airfield was renamed Wright Army Airfield. During the Vietnam War, the field was used for pilot training, and it remains a training area today for the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division.
In 2007, the Liberty County Board of Commissioners, the city of Hinesville and the Liberty County Development Authority partnered to construct a new 13,825-square-foot terminal that houses both military and civilian operations. Boasting newly constructed hangars, a spacious passenger terminal, and ample ramp space, the airport adopted the name MidCoast Regional Airport to reflect its convenient location between the Savannah and Brunswick airports and its proximity to Charleston, S.C. and Jacksonville, Fla.
“We see a great opportunity at MidCoast,” says Ciambra. “The airport boasts beautiful facilities, is a convenient stop near the Georgia coast, and the surrounding community offers a great business environment. We are eager to let folks know about this airport — we feel it is a gem worth sharing.”
