West Star Aviation Named Gold Leader Of Environmental Leadership Program
Grand Junction, CO, October 20, 2015—West Star Aviation is proud to announce they are currently a Gold Leader Award winner from the Colorado Governor’s Environmental Leadership Program (ELP)— the highest level of recognition in ELP. This is the second year West Star maintains the Gold Leader status in the three-year recognition program. They were recognized as a Silver Achiever in 2010 after being first recognized as a Bronze Achiever.
West Star received their award during a ceremony held on October 16, 2015 at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver, Colorado.
The Environmental Leadership Program is a statewide environmental recognition and reward program administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Sustainability Program. The program’s goal is to foster relationships, reward environmental performance and create a healthier, cleaner and more sustainable Colorado.
“It is exciting for us to receive the Gold Leader Award for a second time since we first started participating in the Environmental Leadership Program in 2010,” says Dave Krogman, General Manager, West Star Aviation. “Environmental responsibility is one of our main priorities at West Star, and we will continue to expand our ‘green initiatives’ throughout our facilities.”
In order to be recognized again as an ELP Gold Leader, West Star had to continue to uphold the ELP requirements while also having in place a fully operational, facility-specific Environmental Management System. This means they passed the strict qualifications held by the state of Colorado, as well as upholding the regulations put forth by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, including implementing sustainability efforts such as energy efficiency, waste minimization, and water conservation.
West Star has continued to expand their recycling program, which included: 3,600 lbs of lead acid and nicad aircraft batteries; 9,055 gallons of lacquer thinner; 6,650 lbs of aircraft and automotive tires; 5,105
gallons of used oil; 110 gallons of antifreeze; 213 gallons of cold solvent; as well as 3,616’ of universal waste lamps, 36 CFL lamps and 66 metal halide lamps. They also recovered 7.5 lbs of silver from their x-ray process from August 2014 to August 2015. In addition, West Star opened a new aircraft paint hangar that utilizes electrostatic paint applications, increasing the atomized paint transfer from 65 to 90 percent. This process reduced the amount of atomized particulate matter (P2.5 AND P10) by over two tons annually. The filtration system in this new booth exceeds the 98 percent post-application filtration efficiency for regulated paint booths.
