Yucatán’s Capital City of Merida Adds Two New International Gateways
On June 2, American Airlines launched daily non-stop service from Miami, marking the first of two major hub city expansions for the region at Mérida’s Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport (MID).
Starting on Dec. 10, Aeromexico will launch daily non-stop service from Atlanta, a response to Yucatán Tourism’s new Air Service Development Strategy, a long-term growth plan to develop Yucatán as one of the top destinations for international travelers by creating easier access.
“American Airlines and Aeromexico are strategic partners for Yucatán’s tourism activity, which represents 10.1 percent of our GDP, so these new flights that connect Yucatán with two of the most powerful hub-cities within the airline industry are essential to the longevity of our state’s economic strength,” said Saúl Ancona Salazar, Secretary of Tourism Promotion of Yucatán. “Yucatán appreciates its growing partnership with American Airlines and Aeromexico, and looks forward to introducing new visitors to our warm hospitality, authentic culture and cuisine, and world-famous archeological sites."
American Airlines’ Miami hub serves as a getaway for Europe, the East Coast of the United States, and Latin America markets, while Aeromexico’s code-share with Delta utilizes the Atlanta hub as a connecting point for Delta’s long-haul flight offerings and the East Coast of the United States. These new gateways accommodate the travel demands of Yucatán’s growing international travelers, who have shown an increased propensity to visit the state in recent years.
