Air India Group Uses Data-Driven Tech to Address Emissions and Flight Efficiency
Air India Group is deploying SITA OptiFlight’s advanced climb optimization solution, OptiClimb, and SITA eWAS, two advanced data-driven digital solution.
This move comes during a time when fuel costs are increasing and prioritizing the reduction of carbon emissions is at the forefront of the aviation industry.
The rollout is part of Air India Group’s modernization strategy, which focuses on improving sustainability and operational performance. The technology is now used across the Air India Airbus A320 fleet and the Air India Express Boeing 737 fleet, covering domestic and international routes.
The next step will be deployment on Air India’s widebody fleet. These tools aim to help cut carbon emissions by 35,000 tons annually across Air India’s fleet.
“As the aviation industry navigates growing regulatory and environmental pressure, the need for intelligent, predictive solutions has never been more critical,” said Sumesh Patel, president, Asia Pacific at SITA.
“Air India’s deployment of SITA OptiFlight® and eWAS is a strong example of how smart digital technologies can cut emissions, save fuel, and unlock real operational value across every flight,” added Patel
Chief Operations Officer, Air India, Basil Kwauk commented, “Sustainability and efficiency are core to our transformation into a world-class airline. With SITA OptiFlight® and SITA eWAS, we’re taking meaningful steps to modernize our operations, reduce our carbon footprint.”
SITA OptiFlight allows airlines to optimize key phases of flight using:
- Historical flight data
- Aircraft-specific performance models
- 4D weather forecasts.
This system also features OptiClimb, which offers customized climb-out schedules tailored to each aircraft. This helps pilots reduce fuel burn during energy-intensive parts of flight while maintaining performance and safety.
SITA eWAS gives pilots real-time weather updates and predictive forecasting, helping to:
- Avoid turbulence
- Re-route efficiently
- Make smarter in-flight decisions
These next-gen solutions also support the airline’s sustainability targets. SITA continues to expand its flight optimization technologies, supporting carriers in achieving cost efficiency, operational resilience and long-term environmental impact reduction.
