A&P mechanic Patrick Gray has been interested in aviation since he was young. He dreamed of getting his Pilot’s license, “but when the housing market crashed in 2008 I had to change directions, and since I like working on things I figured going into maintenance was a good fit ...” Gray said.
During his high school career, Gray started working as an electrician and busser. While attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he worked as a lab assistant. As a lab assistant, he helped teach upcoming students in the maintenance sheet metal lab, composites lab and general mechanic labs.
Also while attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he took the Avionics Line Maintenance course. In addition to his schooling at Embry-Riddle, he has also received advanced training for installing L3 Lynx transponders.
After he attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he started working at Belle Aircraft Maintenance as a floor mechanic and engine builder. He also does ADS-B installations and limited avionics work.
Gray makes a point to help others learn more about aviation. When not working, Gray helps his local EAA chapter 1016 “with informative programs during their monthly meeting when they ask and in general help them when they have any questions,” Gray said. “I have also looked over a few of their builds to make sure everything is good before they get their inspections from the FAA for certification.”
Gray has big goals for his future. “I would like to open an engine shop or run my own little maintenance shop on a small airport. I would also like to get my pilots license as well as my CFI so I could help people find their way into the industry whichever way they wanted to get in,” Gray said.
Gray is currently not a member of any industry associations but he has been a member of the EAA in the past.
Mike Everhart, who nominated Gray for this award, is proud of what Gray has achieved in his career so far. “As a valued member of our team Patrick is responsible for engine shop overhaul operations and ADS-B installations. He works closely with senior members of our maintenance staff during annual inspections, and conducts 100 hour inspections for our busy local FAA 141 Flight School. Patrick also provides regular and on-call maintenance services for all airline providers at the Asheville Regional Airport. Patrick is known for his methodical approach to all maintenance tasks, as well as his warm and quiet demeanor. His growth has been recognized by colleagues and customers alike and we are proud of his accomplishments and contributions to aviation,” Everhart said.
