Plane, 2nd Victim, Recovered From Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago Crash That Left Super Bowl Champ’s Daughter Dead
The “vast majority” a single-engine plane and a second victim were extracted from Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago Monday following an airshow mishap that left two aviators dead.
A T-6 Texan plane dove into the water after “rapidly maneuvering before rapidly descending from about 3,000 feet altitude” the Coast Guard reported Saturday, according to Wisconsin’s WBay.com.
The World War II era plane, piloted by 30-year-old Devyn Riley — the daughter of former NFL star Bruce Collie— was flying over Wisconsin during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh’s annual gathering of aeronautics enthusiasts.
Zach Colliemoreno, 20, died alongside Riley.
Witnesses took to the water following the roughly 9 a.m. crash, but police reportedly said the plane’s position complicated recovery efforts. A dive unit worked with local authorities to retrieve the downed aircraft and its crew.
Two other people died in an aerial crash less than four-hours later when a pair of helicopters carrying airshow attendees, who were not participants, collided in flight, according to authorities.
Winnebago County officials asked visitors to stay clear of the Asylum Bay Boat Launch area late Saturday morning in deference to an “emergency vehicle response.”
They posted an image Friday morning of a different plane — wet, but seemingly intact — being towed to shore.
“We never know who might need a little help from us,” the photo caption said. “And we are happy to help where we can.”
EAA Airventure reports its show began at 2:45 p.m. Saturday despite that morning’s quartet of deaths.
