Dec. 6, 2004, Aerostar S.A. started on its long journey into the new venture of commercial aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul.
On that day the first aircraft to fly into Aerostar’s Bacau base for a heavy check was a FlyGlobespan Boeing 737-300 Classic.
Fifteen years later, Aerostar has become firmly established as a centre for excellence for commercial aircraft MRO. Over the years it has performed work on a variety of aircraft types but is now firmly focussed on the Boeing 737 Classic and NG families and the Airbus A319/320/321 Ceo and Neo families.
During this 15 year period Aerostar has overhauled aircraft from a wide customer base of over 50 operators, mainly from within Europe, but also from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Over 700 heavy checks have been carried out during this period.
Initially the commercial aircraft MRO work was carried out in the production hangars previously employed for the conversion of Mig-21 Lancers for the Romanian Air Force. However, in 2012 a new state-of-the-art MRO facility was added to extend the capacity to 6/7 bays.
Now under construction and due to be structurally complete by the end of 2019 is a new MRO hangar located at Iasi International Airport, some 130km north east of Bacau. This will add a further 3-4 aircraft bays.
With a heavy emphasis on encouraging new young talent into the industry, training of new employees for the Iasi MRO facility is well underway alongside continual training for Bacau personnel. The average age of employees in Aerostar’s MRO Civil Aviation Division is 35 years.
Heading up this Division is Director Ioan Dan Velescu who today stated:
“Aerostar has come a long way on its civil MRO journey and we are justifiably proud of our achievements over 15 years in this highly competitive sector. But the opening next year of our new facility at Iasi shows that Aerostar is not standing still. With a relentless focus on quality, on-time delivery and customer service we are looking forward to continued growth over the next decade and more. We thank all those airlines and operators who have placed their trust in us over the years and look forward to continue to serve their MRO needs.”
