The German aircraft manufacturer General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) is advancing its strategic transformation process in order to completely focus on its core competencies in aircraft construction and defense. General Atomics AeroTec Systems focuses on aircraft construction, the maintenance of transport helicopters as well as the expansion of services for unmanned aerial systems (UAS). This process is actively supported by the owner family Blue.
Linden P. Blue, representative of the owner family and CEO of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, emphasized the company's long-term vision during a visit to Oberpfaffenhofen: “We believe in the potential of this location and in the expertise of our workforce. Our investments are a clear signal for a future-oriented focus.”
Focusing on future markets and strengthening core competencies
GA-ATS is strengthening its focus on the development and production of the Do228 NXT. This modern multi-role aircraft will be produced in small series starting in 2025. Final assembly already started in late 2024. Important development and optimization measures - such as new wing components and the expansion of production capacities - have been successfully completed.
In addition, the maintenance of NH90 transport helicopters remains a central element of the strategy. As a certified DEMAR 145 maintenance organization, GA-ATS is responsible for the base maintenance of these helicopters and thus supports the operational readiness of the German Bundeswehr.
In addition, there are plans to expand the Oberpfaffenhofen site into the European service center for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) like the MQ-9. This will enable even closer cooperation with European programs that are already operational in countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain.
Refocusing as an opportunity
As part of its strategic focus, GA-ATS will cease its business jet maintenance (MRO) and aircraft painting operations. Harald Robl, CEO of GA-ATS, explains: “These changes are necessary to strengthen our position in the areas of Do228 production, NH90 maintenance and UAS support. We are aware that this is challenging for those affected, but we will successfully overcome these challenges together.” The employees affected were given alternative positions within the company. GA-ATS also provides training opportunities to facilitate the transition to new areas of responsibility.
Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond
With the market launch of the Do228 NXT, the expansion of UAS service capacities and the strengthening of helicopter maintenance, GA-ATS is on a successful course. The company is positioning itself as a key player in the Aeronautical and Defense sector and is focusing on innovative technologies and strategic partnerships.
