Spirit Airlines Breaks Ground on Dania Beach Headquarters for More than 1,000 Workers

Jan. 10, 2020

Spirit Airlines broke ground Thursday on the company’s new $250 million headquarters in Dania Beach.

The company will move from its existing headquarters in Miramar as soon as the 500,000-square-foot building is finished in 2022.

Global architecture firm Gensler is designing the building, which will be part of the Dania Pointe mixed-use development close to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the airline’s hub.

Spirit executives gathered at the site Thursday with hard hats and shovels in the brand’s signature yellow. They were joined by Gov. Ron DeSantis, who thanked the company for staying in South Florida.

Spirit Airlines said it plans to move 1,000 employees working at its Miramar headquarters into the Dania Beach building and add an additional 225 jobs. On Tuesday, the company announced it is adding two new flights from Fort Lauderdale to Colombia in April.

The budget airline has been based in South Florida for 20 years. Previously infamous for its delays and cancellations, Spirit made an incredible comeback in October 2018 to rank first in the country for on-time performance after overhauling its leadership and operations. The comeback is lasting. Spirit ranked second for on-time performance in October 2019, the most recent month of data available from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Spirit will be joined in Dania Beach by competitor JetBlue Airways, which opened an office for its subsidiary JetBlue Travel Products in the Design Center of the Americas building last year.
