Commuter Flights Taking Off Soon from North Shore to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard
Aug. 10—BEVERLY — North Shore residents will soon be able to avoid the heavy Cape traffic by catching a commuter flight to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
Beverly Regional Airport has announced plans to begin operating commuter service by the end of August, with the possibility of more destinations being added soon.
Airport manager Gloria Bouillon said negotiations are still underway with the provider for the commuter flights.
"We are just about to go through an expansion process, so they came to us at the right time," she said. "They're currently operating under charter service."
Options for commuter flights are in demand, Bouillon said, and even local residents who have compained about noise issues in the past are embracing the idea.
"I've gotten so much positive feedback from the community," she said. "We pride ourselves on efficient use of the airport and fulfilling the wants and needs of our customers."
Because agreement terms with the commuter service provider are still being worked out, Bouillon said details related to ticket prices and flight schedules to the Islands won't be announced for a couple of weeks.
When the service launches, passengers will be able to board a flight with seven other people and arrive at the island destinations about 45 minutes later.
While commuter service is expected to be available year round, Bouillon said the number of flights offered will depend on demand.
"We are looking at seasonal scheduling for the majority of the service days, with fewer flights during the winter months," she said.
As for the long term, Bouillon said she anticipates maintaining the partnership and keeping the service going for the foreseeable future.
Bouillon said more destinations will likely be added as soon as September. Bar Harbor, Providence and New York City are a few of the desired locations listed in a commuter service survey on the airport's website.
"We're just really excited to get this off the ground," Bouillon said. "It's such a positive thing for the community."
Those who do fly out of Beverly Regional Airport will be able to take advantage of several perks, as well, including free overnight parking and free Wi-Fi.
