CLEVELAND, Ohio – Spirit Airlines is prepping for a major expansion at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, although details are scarce.
The carrier recently signed an agreement with the airport that more than doubles its gate and office space at Hopkins. The additional space includes a second gate in the airport’s A concourse, plus expanded office space. The agreement goes into effect Dec. 1.
A statement released jointly by the airport and airline does not say what, if any, new service may be in the works for Cleveland.
Spirit spokesman Erik Hofmeyer said the carrier does plan service additions in the future, but wasn’t prepared to announce them.
Spirit currently flies to 11 destinations from Cleveland, including Miami International Airport, which launched this week.
Spirit is known for its bright yellow planes, low fares and relentless fee structure, charging for everything from baggage to seat assignments to beverages.
The carrier entered the Cleveland market in 2015, shortly after United Airlines closed its hub at Hopkins.
