A spike in flight cancellations at Logan International Airport in Boston that began Thursday continued into Friday morning, as possible poor afternoon weather threatened to further complicate the departure schedule for weekend travelers.
Nearly 400 outgoing flights were canceled or delayed at the Boston airport on Thursday, one of several East Coast travel hubs that saw significant disruptions, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.
Bradley International Airport in Connecticut faced delays on nearly a third of its outgoing flights Thursday, but had only six flights disrupted Friday.
The three airports in the New York City metropolitan area — Newark, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy — together had more than 1,400 flights canceled or delayed, while Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina added another 450 affected flights.
On Friday, travelers arrived at Logan to 80 disrupted outgoing flights, the third most of any American airport. More than half were cancellations.
Passengers faced long lines at the ticket counters sorting out their travel, according to CBS Boston. Images shared by Boston 25 showed travelers sleeping on the terminal floors.
Massport spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan blamed poor weather across the East Coast for the delays, NBC Boston reported. She said disrupted flights were common during thunderstorm season.
On Friday, with dozens of departing flights already canceled in Boston, afternoon thunderstorms could further hinder airport operations.
Starting early Friday afternoon and continuing into the evening, isolated severe thunderstorms are possible throughout Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Service.
Though the storms could be limited in duration, they may bring some communities winds between 40 and 60 miles per hour and hail up to an inch in size, the weather agency said.
