More than 180 flights in and out of DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field have been canceled and hundreds more delayed due to thunderstorms and heavy rain falling across North Texas Sunday night into Monday.
Just before 8 a.m. Monday, the FAA issued ground stops for departures at both DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field lasting until 9:15 a.m.
Flight disruptions include the cancellation of more than 10% of flights in and out Dallas Love Field, according to the aviation tracking website Flightaware.com. With more heavy rain and lightning in the forecast, that’s only a fraction of the 366 commercial flights scheduled at the airport today at Dallas Love Field, most on Southwest Airlines, according to Cirium, another flight schedule tracking service.
Another 27 flights at Love Field have been delayed.
At DFW International Airport, the nation’s second busiest commercial air hub, 120 flights have been canceled Monday and 433 more have been delayed.
Both airports are in the middle of a massive thunderstorm sweeping through North Texas. Dallas Love Field has accumulated 6.76 inches of rain during the last 24 hours and 7.7 inches of rain has dropped at DFW International Airport. according to the National Weather Service.
The FAA issued ground stops and delays at DFW International Airport last night too. Those were lifted Monday morning before being reinstated just before 8 a.j. as more heavy rain fell.
Some gates at DFW’s Terminal A lost power for a period this morning, according to the airport’s social media channels. Social media users are also reporting that baggage claim in the terminal isn’t working.
Monday’s cancellations could only compound problems at both airports from rain Sunday. DFW had more than 400 cancellations Sunday, about 20% of all flights in and out, according to Flightaware. Dallas Love Field saw about 7% of its flights canceled Sunday, about 52 in all.
The heavy rains across the city are causing major traffic disruptions, making it difficult to get to the airports even for flights that are still on schedule.
