Amsterdam — Due to an acute shortage of security staff, Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport called on airlines to cancel flights on Monday.

Travellers must inform themselves in good time about delays and cancelled flights, the airport announced this afternoon.

There were delays and long waiting times. Travellers should therefore expect to miss their flights. The queues of passengers reached far outside the airport building.

"This is not normal," said one outraged passenger. "Unbelievable chaos at Schiphol, what an organization," tweeted another.

The fire brigade handed out water and sweets to those waiting.

Like other airports in Europe, the airport in the Dutch capital has been struggling with a shortage of ground staff for months. Airlines have often been asked to cancel flights because of this.

On several occasions, there has been chaos and long waiting times. At the same time, attempts have been made to recruit new staff.
