Lufthansa Takes Blame for February Computer Crash in Frankfurt

Lufthansa has taken responsibility for a February 15 computer systems failure that led to about 250 cancelled flights at the German airline's Frankfurt airport hub.

Frankfurt — Lufthansa has taken responsibility for a February 15 computer systems failure that led to about 250 cancelled flights at the German airline's Frankfurt airport hub.

The outage came after a construction accident in which an excavator cut four fibre-optic lines during work on a Frankfurt commuter train line.

But on Friday, Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr said that the airline's systems remained operational on backup connections until the next morning, when problems began bobbing up at the software level.

The airline's IT service provider continues to investigate but it appears that shifting some functions to the cloud could have avoided the issue, Spohr said.

Neither German rail service Deutsche Bahn nor telecoms firm Deutsche Telekom were responsible for the outage, Spohr said.

The Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, was closed to landings for around three hours on February 15. Thousands of passengers had to deal with delays and flight cancellations as a result.
