Rio de Janeiro — A plane carrying 62 people has crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, the Brazilian airline VoePass announced on Friday.
It was initially unclear if there were any fatalities as a result of the crash in the city of Vinhedo.
"There is still no confirmation of how the accident happened or the current situation of the people on board," VoePass announced on Instagram.
According to the airline, there were 58 passengers and four crew members on the aircraft. The plane was reportedly travelling from the city of Cascavel in the state of Paraná towards Guarulhos in São Paulo.
São Paulo–Guarulhos Airport is the largest airport in Brazil.
The fire brigade also confirmed the crash. They announced that they had seven rescue teams on site. Hospitals in Vinhedo were preparing to receive the injured, the online news site G1 reported.
In addition to the fire brigade, the civil defence department and the police were also deployed.
Images and videos on social networks showed a plane going into a spin and falling from the sky. Thick smoke subsequently rose up.
