Transport Workers Union Announces Historic Tentative Agreement With Allegiant Air
Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 577 has reached a Tentative Agreement with Allegiant Air that, by ratification of the membership, will make Local 577 members the highest-paid flight attendants surpassing all Low Cost Carriers, along with other significant compensation gains and quality of life improvements.
The five-year agreement, covering nearly 1,900 Local 577 members, was reached after more than 10 months of bargaining and includes numerous new wins that help to address flight attendants’ growing burnout and desire for greater work-life balance.
Leading the economic improvements are immediate pay increases ranging from 15.5% to 40% beginning July 1, 2023, with additional 3% annual wage increases. Individual hourly pay increases over the life of the five-year agreement range from 49% to 107%. In addition, the Tentative Agreement includes industry-best health insurance cost increase protections, increased 401(k) matching contributions, improvements to sick and vacation accrual and usage, a new minimum day credit, commissions from onboard sales, and, for the first time ever, Allegiant Air flight attendants will be eligible for three weeks of paid parental leave.
The Tentative Agreement also addresses quality of life issues for flight attendants, including safety improvements, limitations on hours worked, and more rest. In a major contract win, related to the TWU’s Assault Won’t Fly campaign that has advocated for the passage of the Protection from Abusive Passengers Act in Congress, the Union also worked with Allegiant to ensure that a new Assault Policy will be implemented within six months. As incidents involving unruly passengers continue to be on the rise, the TWU will continue to work directly with the airline to provide meaningful protections for flight attendants and other airline workers.
Voting on the Tentative Agreement will begin June 27th.
“The Tentative Agreement will catapult our flight attendants over the top of every Low-Cost Carrier and greatly improve the quality of life for everyone,” said Christa Gifford, President of TWU Local 577. “The TWU 577 Negotiating Team is proud of the work that has been done to reach this historic second Contract.”
“This Tentative Agreement marks a historic moment, not just for TWU Allegiant Flight Attendants, but for the entire airline industry. With this Tentative Agreement we have laid the groundwork for Allegiant to surpass all low-cost carrier's wages, creating a new paradigm for other flight attendants at these carriers,” said John Samuelsen, TWU International President. “The TWU Local 577 negotiating team fought hard to ensure Allegiant Flight Attendants receive the best contract possible, and their success demonstrates the Union’s commitment to improving the lives of our members.”
"We would like to commend the hard work and dedication of the negotiating teams for both Allegiant and the TWU for meaningfully improving our contract on behalf of our flight attendants,” said Allegiant President Greg Anderson. “This historic deal reflects our shared commitment of fostering a work environment that properly recognizes the invaluable contributions they provide. We look forward to the next step in the process.”
