Timothy Bannon has built his career around shaping airports that serve as both regional assets and global gateways. Since beginning his career under the mentorship of Gary Shafer at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Bannon has advanced through key leadership roles to his current position as Executive Director of the University of Illinois Willard Airport. “The complexity of our industry is truly fascinating and inspiring,” he says, reflecting on the mix of challenges and opportunities that drew him into airport management.
Bannon’s career highlights include advancing infrastructure projects and operational improvements that strengthen airport safety, security, and efficiency. At Willard Airport, he has prioritized creating a professional culture rooted in public service while spearheading initiatives that expand community engagement. Under his leadership, more than 600 students toured the airport this year, part of a broader effort to make aviation accessible to future generations. His work reflects a consistent vision: that airports can drive economic development, connectivity, and educational opportunity.
He has also earned recognition as a trusted leader in the national aviation community. Bannon completed the rigorous Accredited Airport Executive (A.A.E.) credential through the American Association of Airport Executives, where he now mentors future candidates and participates in certification interview panels.
