Skagit Regional Airport recognized four improvement projects Friday that cost about $24 million to complete.

Port of Skagit Commissioner Mahlon Hull said $19 million of the funding came from the Federal Aviation Administration, $4.5 million from the Port of Skagit, and $600,000 from the state Department of Transportation.

Port of Skagit spokesperson Linda Tyler said the airport has experienced significant growth over the past several years.

“This investment enables our airport to grow in capacity and increased opportunities for business and general aviation uses in our community, region and beyond,” Tyler said.

The Port of Skagit celebrated the completion of the Lot 72 ramp construction, terminal ramp reconstruction and overlay, Taxiway A rehabilitation and A-4 realignment, and Runway 04/22 rehabilitation.

Aviation Director Heather Rogerson said the Lot 72 project created more ramp space for large aircraft parking and access for lots that have private hangars.

The reconfiguration of the A-4 connector taxiway will make it safer for airport operators, and the new overlay on runway 04/22 was the first time the runway had been overlaid since it was constructed about the time of World War II.

Speakers at the Friday celebration included Port of Skagit staff, Skagit Airport Support Association President Jay Findlay, state Department of Transportation Aviation Director Ann Richart, Skagit County Commissioner Lisa Janicki, and U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen by way of a recorded message.
