Biometric Security Measures Now Being Used at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport

July 19, 2019

Travelers making their way through Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport today will see kiosks for a biometric scanning service now available.

CLEAR uses scanning technology to automate the identity check for air travelers. The technology identifies you through eye scans or fingerprints. It was used earlier this month at Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game in Cleveland.

A private company, CLEAR membership is $15 per month, paid annually, with the option to add up to 3 additional family members for $50 per year. Children under 18 can use the CLEAR Lane for free when accompanied by a CLEAR family member.

The technology is certified as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. CLEAR is available at more than 60 airports and the service has about 3.8 million members, the company says. The scan recognizes you, serving as your ticket and reservation.

Using the service doesn’t mean members get to skip all security measures. CLEAR members move to the front of physical security screening after biometric identification without having to remove your shoes.

Birmingham Airport Authority President and CEO Ronald Mathieu said the service should elevate airport travelers’ experiences.

“Our goal at BHM is to provide passengers an easy and convenient travel experience,” he said.

The service employs about 25 people at the airport, Howard Kass, CLEAR’s executive vice president for corporate affairs, said.

“Today’s launch is an important step toward making travel stress disappear from The Magic City,” Kass said.
