San Jose Airport Traffic Plunged to Nearly Nothing in April
SAN JOSE — Passenger travel through San Jose International Airport nearly vanished during April amid coronavirus-linked business shutdowns, officials reported.
In a sharp departure from record levels of passenger volumes at the San Jose travel hub in recent years, passenger arrivals and departures tumbled by a jaw-dropping 97.1 percent in April compared with April 2019, the airport reported.
An estimated 37,600 travelers passed through the airport in April. That compared with nearly 1.3 million in April 2019.
The April travel numbers also were a fraction of the 508,100 who arrived at or departed in March.
Measuring the decline over a single month, San Jose airport travel fell 92.6 percent in April compared with March, the airport reported.
The severe drop in air travel during both March and April could break a string of consecutive annual gains in passenger activity at San Jose’s airport.
For all of 2019, about 15.7 million passengers traveled through the airport, up 9.8 percent from the number the prior year.
Starting in 2013, air passenger traffic in San Jose had risen steadily for several years in a row.
In 2020, however, for the first four months of the year, 2.81 million air passengers traveled through San Jose airport, which was down 39.4 percent from the 4.63 million who traveled through the South Bay airport over the first four months of 2019.
