Gordon Phillips, AIA, LEED AP, has rejoined HNTB Corp.’s architecture practice as aviation project director. Based in the firm’s Bellevue office, Phillips delivers significant design projects for major aviation clients, including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Phillips is an architect and an engineer with more than three decades of experience in planning, design and implementation of aviation facilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia. His recent work has focused on planning, design and construction administration of airport terminals in both a technical capacity and a managerial role.
“Gordon is a needle-mover for HNTB’s aviation architecture team,” said Chris Migneron, AIA, NCARB, HNTB architecture national practice leader and senior vice president. “In this significant leadership position, he offers clients the insight and expertise to navigate their most challenging design projects. We’re excited to have his experience and leadership back at HNTB where the architecture practice continues to expand in Seattle and across the country.”
Prior to rejoining HNTB, Phillips was design manager for another consulting firm where he worked closely with the staff at Sea-Tac on large infrastructure improvements. He previously worked for HNTB as project director from 2009 to 2013. During that time, he gained experience leading some of the nation’s largest and most complex aviation projects, including acting as the project manager on the Terminal 2 West “Green Build” expansion at San Diego International Airport.
“Bringing my design and sustainability expertise to clients’ most challenging projects is a passion for me,” said Phillips. “I am excited to be back at HNTB and look forward to providing innovative design solutions for major terminal projects.”
Phillips earned a master’s in architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles and a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from McGill University. He also has given numerous presentations on sustainable design of airports, including a white paper on “Best Practices for Sustainable Design of Chinese Airports” for the U.S. Trade and Development Agency.
HNTB’s many signature architecture projects include serving as lead architect and designer for the Terminal 2 West Building and airside expansion at San Diego International Airport, the first LEED Platinum commercial terminal in the world; architect of record for the new South Terminal at Orlando International Airport; architectural, engineering and design services for United Airlines terminals 7 and 8 at Los Angeles International Airport; lead architect, designer, and engineer for the Denver International Airport’s expansion of Concourse A-West and B-West; and lead designer for the Los Angeles International Airport’s Automated People Mover project. HNTB was also the lead architect of record and designer of Levi’s Stadium, the first new construction NFL stadium to achieve LEED Gold certification; and is currently serving as architect of record for Allegiant Stadium the new home for the Las Vegas Raiders.
