Flights Grounded as Mount Etna Erupts in Italy

July 22, 2019

Rome (dpa) - Flights were temporarily grounded overnight to Saturday on the Italian island of Sicily after a volcanic eruption at Mount Etna.

The volcano began erupting late Friday evening, the Italian Institute for Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) said. All flights were stopped temporarily in the nearby Catania airport.

However, flights were able to resume on Saturday, the airport said, but passengers should expect delays.

Small eruptions are fairly frequent occurrences at Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes.
