Juárez Airport Shooting: One Dies from Heart Attack, Worker Injured, Police Say
A woman died from a heart attack during a shooting Wednesday evening at the Juárez airport terminal, police said.
Television news footage showed a shattered glass door at an one of the entrances to the passenger terminal at Abraham Gonzalez International Airport.
News video showed crime scene tape blocking the terminal, a body covered by a sheet wheeled out on a stretcher and what appeared to be dozens of evidence markers on a sidewalk and on the street right in front of the terminal.
The shooting, which occurred before 7 p.m., caused a large response by police agencies and troops with Mexico's National Guard but details on the incident were sketchy Wednesday night.
An older woman died from a heart attack and an airport worker was injured during a confrontation between armed civilians, Juárez police chief Raul Avila told Channel 44-XHIJ.
It was unknown if the woman was a passenger or was possibly waiting for someone at the airport. Flights were temporarily stopped but resumed later in the night.
The airport offers flights to Mexico City and other cities in Mexico.
The shooting is the second near the airport this week.
On Monday night, the college student son of the mayor of the town of Villa Ahumada was shot and killed on the street outside the airport while possibly waiting for a ride after arriving on a flight.
Violence has been rising in Juárez with about 30 murders in the first four days of March with more than 250 homicides this year, according to a tally by the Norte Digital news website.
