City to Discuss Reestablishing Passenger Air Service at Las Cruces Airport

Sept. 28, 2020

LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces City Council will discuss reestablishing passenger air service at Las Cruces International Airport during its regularly scheduled work session at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28 via video conference.

There have been no scheduled passenger flights at Las Cruces International Airport since Westward Airways ceased operations on July 25, 2005. Historically, 11 airlines provided commercial passenger air service at Las Cruces International from the late 1940s to 2005.

The City’s Economic Development Department is working with Airplanners, LLC, Air Service Development and Consulting to conduct a commercial air service study to determine the feasibility of restoring passenger air service.

The study is in support of the council's Strategic Action Plan and Economic Development Department’s Strategic Business Plan goals to have daily, regional commercial flights. This assessment is one phase of a multi-part analysis to grow the economic vibrancy at the airport and the West Mesa Industrial Park.

The purpose of the plan is to guide investment in beautification, providing a unifying theme to the airfield that will also serve to expand into the industrial park, adjacent to the airport. The plan will include a plant and color palette for the entry corridor on Crawford Boulevard, parking and terminal areas and future landscape build out. Appropriate signs to announce arrival at the airport, while incorporating a new airport logo and color scheme, is also part of the scope of work.

Additionally, Monday’s work session will include an update to the council on Rio Grande Flood Plain Management. A presentation from the city’s Public Works Department and Andale Construction, Inc., will also provide details about a High Density Mineral Bond Pavement Maintenance Surface Treatment to be utilized on city roadways.

The work session will be televised on CLC-TV, Comcast Cable channel 20. The work session will also be available online at clctv.com and at YouTube.com/clctv20
