FAA Awards Cleveland Nearly $32.75 Million for Use at Hopkins International and Burke Lakefront Airports

CLEVELAND, Ohio —  The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday awarded Cleveland nearly $32.75 million to combat the spread of pathogens at Cleveland Hopkins International and Burke Lakefront airports.

The grants, part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program that supports public-use airports, were announced by Sen. Sherrod Brown. The two Cleveland grants were among 13 in the state of Ohio totaling more than $45 million.

“Ohio airports are vital to supporting travel and commerce in the state,” Brown said in a statement. “These investments will help to ensure the safety of Northeast Ohio airports for passengers for years to come.”

Cleveland was awarded nearly $32.6 million to provide economic relief for costs related to operations, personnel, cleaning, sanitization, janitorial services, debt service payments, and combating the spread of pathogens including the coronavirus at Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport

The city was awarded another $148,000 for similar use at Burke.

Other grants announced Tuesday will benefit these 11 airports:

  • $7.75 million to Akron Canton Regional Airport Authority to buy snow removal equipment, rehabilitate taxiways and aviation aprons, rehabilitate existing lighting systems, and seal sections of taxiway surface area at Akron-Canton Regional Airport.
  • $1.89 million to  Bucyrus to extend a runway and install replacement runway indicators at Port Bucyrus-Crawford County Airport and an additional $32,000 to combat the spread of pathogens.
  • $1.36 million to  Galion to maintain runway structural integrity at Galion Municipal Airport.
  • $530,000 to the Western Reserve Port Authority for crack repair and joint filling on taxiways and runways at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Trumbull County.
  • $413,560 to Geauga County Airport Authority and the Geauga County commissioners to buy land for a runway approach at Geauga County Airport.
  • $350,000 to  Portage County Regional Airport Authority and Board of Commissioners to update its master plan to reflect the future needs of the Portage County Airport.
  • $148,000 to  Cuyahoga County to combat the spread of pathogens at Cuyahoga County Airport.
  • $59,000 to Wayne County Commissioners to combat the spread of pathogens at Wayne County Airport.
  • $32,000 to  Williams County Regional Airport Authority to combat the spread of pathogens at Williams County Airport.
  • $22,000 to Ashtabula County Airport Authority to combat the spread of pathogens at Northeast Ohio Regional Airport.

The support of public use airports is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. Money awarded through the Airport Improvement Program may be used for projects that improve airport safety, capacity, security and environmental impact.
