Dec. 20—Vientiane( Vientiane Times/ANN)- The government has given the green light to the Korea Airport Corporation (KAC) to carry out a feasibility study for the upgrade of Luang Prabang International Airport, at an estimated cost of about US$100 million.
A Memorandum of Understanding on the project was signed last week by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr Sthabandith Insisienmay and the president of KAC, Mr Son Chang Wan. Deputy Prime Minister Dr Sonexay Siphandone, who is also Minister of Planning and Investment, witnessed the signing. The Managing Director of NAK services Co., Ltd., Mr Sinnakone Phommasith, whose company represents KAC in Laos, said the upgrade would involve making the existing airport a "smart" facility, and would include a cultural centre, a meeting hall, and a hotel for use by tourists.
The development is part of the government's overall plans to modernise and expand the capacity and services offered as part of international integration efforts taking place around the country. The aim is for Luang Prabang International Airport to cater to the demands of international tourism and business, and the government has selected a contractor of proven quality, experience and financial resources to undertake a feasibility study. Of the six companies shortlisted for the contract, KAC was the eventual winner.
