Fatal Paving Accident at KCI Airport Involved Business Previously Fined for Safety Issues
A company working on construction project at Kansas City International Airport where a worker was killed last month in a paving accident collapsed was had previously been fined for safety violations, according to data from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
A worker for Clarkson Construction Company was killed in an Oct. 21st paving accident at Kansas City International Airport.
The worker, who has not been publicly identified, was struck by a machine during paving operations on an existing runway at Kansas City International Airport. The project was not related to the new terminal construction.
OSHA cited the company in 2018 with one serious violation pertaining to having the appropriate fall protection. The company abated the violation and paid $11,641, according to the OSHA data. The violation was reduced to an “other-than-serious” violation.
The company was also cited in 2021 with one serious violation pertaining to protecting employees working in trenches from cave-ins. The company abated the violation and paid a fine of $5,364, according to the data. The fine was reduced to an “other-than-serious” violation.
OSHA’s investigation into the fatal construction accident continues, said Scott Allen, an OSHA spokesperson. OSHA by law has six months to compete its investigation and, when warranted, issue citations and propose monetary penalties.
