Apr. 11—The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash of an experimental aircraft at Oakland County's Troy airport Sunday afternoon. No one was hurt.

FAA officials told The Oakland Press the nose wheel on a single-engine Glasair 1 collapsed after the plane landed just after noon on Sunday.

Troy firefighters were summoned to the scene, where they found the 65-year-old pilot uninjured. He was the plane's only occupant and had been able to get out safely, said Lt. Keith Young, the fire department spokesman.

Young said there was no fire and no fuel leaked from the aircraft.

In a Facebook post about the crash, Young noted the pilot was able to react quickly and handle the aircraft until he could safely land.

"Airport personnel had confirmed that the airport runway was shut down prior to the fire department arrival and remained shut for 4 hours," Young wrote. The shutdown allowed towing and airport officials to remove the plane from the runway.

The plane, a 2-seat, fixed-wing Glasair was built in 1991 from a kit by a California man, Leonard Hendleman, who sold the plane in 2006. The plane changed hands twice before Luong G. Tran bought it in 2019.
