California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport Reopens After Runway Work

Aug. 28, 2023

Aug. 26—The Humboldt County airport in McKinleyville reopened Saturday after work was done on runways.

It was the first rehabilitation work done on the airport's primary runway in nearly 30 years.

"We appreciate the community's continued support while these much-needed upgrades to ACV are being made," said Humboldt County Department of Aviation Director Cody Roggatz in a prepared statement. "This project will benefit the community for decades to come."

There are still two more phases of work to be done on the airport facilities.

The next phase will have work done overnight between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Aug. 28 through Sept. 8. It will include milling and paving work on the taxiways connecting the airport's runways.

After that, there will need to be 75 nightly closures between midnight and 6 a.m. over a period from Sept. 11 and Dec. 15 to conduct electrical work to bring the newly installed in-pavement lighting and electrical systems flush with the newly paved runway surface.

The airport's secondary runway will remain open during the overnight closures for medical flights, U.S. Coast Guard operations, and other general aviation operations.
