Sep. 7—Pittsburghers will soon have another travel option to get to South Florida.
Spirit Airlines said Monday that it will begin new nonstop service between Pittsburgh International Airport and Miami International Airport on Nov. 15
The low-cost carrier will offer daily flights leaving Pittsburgh at 11:29 a.m. and arriving in Miami at 2:15 p.m. Return flights leave Miami at 8 a.m. and arrive in Pittsburgh at 10:39 a.m.
Despite Florida being a popular destination for Pittsburghers, the new Spirit service will be just the second airline to fly directly to Miami International Airport. American Airlines offers one daily direct flight to Miami, according to the airline's website.
The Miami area is also served by flights to Fort Lauderdale, about 20 miles north of Miami. Both Southwest Airlines and Spirit offer daily flights to Fort Lauderdale.
Spirit also flies between Pittsburgh and Orlando and the airline will resume daily, nonstop flights to Tampa on Nov. 15 and Fort Myers on Jan. 10, according to the Allegheny County Airport Authority.
The announcement comes as the airport authority says Pittsburghers have been flying to the Sunshine State more than ever.
Department of Transportation statistics show that nearly 2,900 passengers a day traveled between Pittsburgh and Florida destinations during the first quarter of 2023. The airport authority said that was the highest volume since 2000.
