Dust off your passports because this spring Lufthansa Airlines is increasing its nonstop flights by 70 percent between Munich, Germany, and San Diego.

In April, Lufthansa Airlines will begin offering nonstop service between Munich's Franz Josef Strauss International Airport and San Diego International Airport five days a week. Currently, the airline offers three days per week of nonstop service between Munich and San Diego.

Also, just in time for the summer travel season, Lufthansa will transition to daily service in June.

"Munich has been one of the most popular international destinations for travelers," said Kimberly Becker, CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. "Seeing Lufthansa expand its service frequency to daily flights next year will provide even more opportunities for leisure and business travel and will support continued economic growth in both regions."

European travel out of San Diego has bounced back considerably from pre-pandemic slumps, according to the San Diego Airport Authority, and Lufthansa's expanded offerings will help address the increased demand. The number of passengers traveling between San Diego and Europe is now 12 percent higher than in 2019.

Munich is one of the most popular European travel destinations from San Diego, alongside Paris and London.

"San Diego has flourished into one of our key West Coast gateways and we are thrilled to fly daily to Munich, starting in the summer season of 2024. For our customers it means additional travel opportunities, not only to Bavaria but across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and beyond," said Dirk Janzen, vice president of passenger sales for the Americas, Lufthansa Group Airlines.

Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, Lufthansa Airlines operated nonstop flights between Frankfurt, Germany, and San Diego, but the service was suspended in March 2020.
