New Airline Coming to Syracuse

Oct. 18, 2023

Minnesota-based Sun Country Airlines, which describes itself as an “ultra-low-cost” carrier, will begin its first ever regularly scheduled flights at Syracuse Hancock International Airport next summer, the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority said Tuesday.

Sun Country will launch twice weekly service to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) on June 6, 2024.

The Sunday and Thursday service is currently scheduled as seasonal, running through Sept. 1, 2024. The nonstop flights are expected to depart midday so they can tie in with late afternoon connecting flights to major West Coast markets, including Los Angeles and Seattle.

The route will be served by the airline’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft featuring 186 seats.

Syracuse will be Sun Country’s third New York destination, along with Buffalo and New York City.

“It will provide travelers with access to all Upstate New York has to offer, including the Finger Lakes Wine Region and the Adirondack Mountains,” Grant Whitney, senior vice president and chief revenue officer of Sun Country Airlines, said in a statement.

The airline did not say what the fares will be on the new route.

Syracuse is one of 10 cities in the U.S. and Canada that Sun Country is adding to its network.

Sun Country Airlines’ announcement brings to 30 the number of destinations Syracuse travelers can fly directly to via nonstop flights. With the addition of Sun Country, there will be nine airlines that operate regularly scheduled flights from Syracuse.

Sun Country describes itself as a “hybrid” airline that provides scheduled, charter and cargo service. The airline says it focuses on serving leisure travelers, people who are traveling to visit friends and relatives, and charter customers, and provides cargo service to Amazon. It operates flights throughout the U.S. and to Mexico, Central America, Canada and the Caribbean.
