Since taking over as the sole provider of aviation services at the Reading Regional Airport this year, the authority has been busy renovating and revamping the facilities it secured as part of the deal.
And on Tuesday, the authority took several steps to advance that process — unanimously approving about $713,000 in improvements to the headquarters for the fixed base operation and repairs to two hangars.
The authority finalized the purchase of the assets of two fixed base operations at the airport in January at a cost of about $14 million.
The assets acquired in the deal included a 18,000-square-foot building located next to the main terminal that offers passenger and pilot lounges, office space and a conference room. It also came with more than 70,000 square feet of hangar space.
The operation provides fuel, aircraft maintenance and detailing, towing, cargo handling, planeside access and parking services.
Those assets have now been rebranded under the new moniker Reading Aviation.
Since creating Reading Aviation, staff have been busy with all sorts of work to freshen up its facilities. Fresh coats of paint have been applied, new carpet has been laid and modern furniture has been purchased.
The moves made Tuesday were bigger ticket items, like replacing roofs, plumbing and electrical work. The contracts awarded and costs included:
• General construction — Balton Construction of Lebanon County, $418,400.
• Plumbing construction — Vision Mechanical of West Reading, $67,300.
• HVAC construction — Vision Mechanical of West Reading, $110,100.
• Electrical construction — H.B. Frazer of Spring Township, $117,300.
Airport Director Zackary Tempesco told the board Tuesday that the $2 million improvement project is on budget.
