Aug. 28, 2024

Aug. 27—MINERAL WELLS — A master plan for the next five to 20 years at Mineral Wells Regional Airport will go before council members in draft form in coming weeks, the airport board learned Thursday.

"The master plan is our five-, 10- and 20-year outlook for the development of the airport," Airport Manager Haley Cuevas told the board during its regular monthly session.

Consultants with Garver Engineering continue to study population and job market growth trends to hone the document.

The plan also must pass go with the Federal Aviation Administration. To save time, Haley said it will go to council members on Oct. 1 as a draft "working document."

She also expects to include zoning elements to help ensure businesses attracted to the site in Mineral Wells southeast sector match overall goals.

In other discussion and action Thursday, Cuevas said a new gate installed Aug. 4 needs only tweaks to be fully functioning.

The Columbia Street gate needs a stop sign and a bar on the entry road telling drivers where to stop and trigger the gate to open.

The gate operates from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Board member Travis Kunkel said the restricted entry is preventing a recent phenomenon of young drivers using the tarmac as a racetrack.
