The Fort McMurray Airport Authority continues to operate as key transportation infrastructure for emergency operations and the transportation of food and supplies for first responders and evacuees.

Commercial air traffic is suspended until further notice and the public is asked to contact their airline for the latest updates regarding flights.  Information and updates can also be found on the YMM Airport, Air Canada, and WestJet social media feeds.

The following provides detail on the status of the Fort McMurray International Airport and its campus as of 1600 on May 5.

  • The Fort McMurray International Airport (Main Terminal) has not been damaged
  • The runway, taxiways and apron areas have not been damaged
  • The North Terminal (old terminal building) has not been damaged
  • The Airport maintenance garage received minimal damage
  • A number of structures along Snow Eagle Road/Airport Road received varying degrees of damage

Operations are being managed very well by a small staff onsite lead by Bill Werny, vice president of operations.  He is working closely with the emergency operations centre for the region.  A satellite administration operations centre has been set up in Edmonton, in support of airport operations.
