Flagstaff Airport Unveils New Liquid Collection and Water Bottle Refill Stations
Flagstaff tourist season is upon us and the Flagstaff Airport is making major strides to increase their long term sustainability. The city of Flagstaff completed the Airport Sustainability Plan in early July and is already in the process of implementing changes throughout the facility.
The Flagstaff Airport Sustainability Plan aims to create a facility that is economically, environmentally, socially and operationally sustainable. To date, the airport has installed LED lighting, a water bottle refill station after the security checkpoint, and transitioned from liquid soap to foam soap to save water.
Starting this July, Flagstaff will offer an innovative solution for liquid waste at airport security. Funded by an Arizona Recycling Coalition grant, the airport is happy to provide a liquid collection station to help visitors properly dispose of forgotten liquids above three ounces. This simple, but highly effective project, will enhance the airport’s overarching sustainability goals and make a strong statement to the 200,000 travelers that come through the airport annually. With this new station, the City hopes to decrease recycling contamination, divert liquid waste from the landfill, increase recyclables collected, decrease stress on janitorial staff, and encourage material reuse.
Additionally, the Flagstaff Airport recently installed a water bottle refill station after the TSA checkpoint to encourage travelers to reduce the use of plastic bottles and fill up reusable bottles before leaving Flagstaff.
