ATLNext Project to Extend Plane Train Tunnel

Sept. 7, 2016

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) officials will host an informational meeting later this month to discuss a specific portion of ATLNext, the $6 billion capital improvement program at the Airport. The Plane Train Tunnel Extension project will extend the current Plane Train tunnel west from its existing endpoint under the Domestic Terminal and continue under the MARTA and the SkyTrain stations to the Ground Transportation area. The extension will create a more efficient train turn-back operation, allowing for a significant reduction in train headway (the time interval between trains), which will yield an increase in passenger capacity.

The scope of the project includes the design and construction of a 600-foot tunnel. Also included are vertical circulation components inside the terminal, evacuation stairways, running tracks and crossover equipment.

Due to the project’s unique requirements, ATL officials will host an industry-geared meeting Sept. 20. Construction firms familiar with transportation-based tunnel projects are invited to attend.
