Strong Development Continues at Villeneuve Airport
Villeneuve Airport continued its rapid development in 2016 with a series of new facilities either completed or underway and the second edition of the annual Airshow held at Villeneuve, bringing thousands of people to the facility. Villeneuve Airport is the region’s main satellite airport to Edmonton International Airport (EIA), serving a range of general aviation needs, including flight training, recreational flying and corporate flights.
“2016 was another solid year of development at Villeneuve Airport,” says Tom Ruth, EIA president and CEO. “Villeneuve is a vital regional aviation asset with a very active and committed resident aviation community, which continues to make significant private investment in the airport.”
Villeneuve development
The airport welcomed its second fixed-base operator (FBO), Polaris Air. The company’s 25,000-sq.-ft. facility is currently under construction.
Phase I lots are full and Villeneuve has four additional lots to lease. All this development means more indoor space for owners to house aircraft, making Villeneuve even more attractive. Prop Works/ Hi-Noon has commenced construction of a hangar on Lot 10.
Growing popularity continues to drive the need for expansion and Edmonton Airports will continue to work onsite with tenants, owners and operators to develop and prioritize projects to develop the airport. In addition, Edmonton Airports will continue working with our regional partners to identify solutions to connect the existing water reservoir to the County’s supply line, which will be a key enabler of Villeneuve expansion.
Edmonton Airshow
Villeneuve successfully hosted the second annual Edmonton Airshow in August 2016, with 25,000 people attending over the weekend. Edmonton Airports provided logistical support for the airshow and will work with airshow organizer RWE Events again on August 19 and 20, 2017 to ensure the success of this exciting community event, which will be a special show celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, and will feature the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds.
Aircraft activity steady
Villeneuve Airport remained busy with 54,794 aircraft movements (landings or takeoffs) in 2016.
