Indy Airport Earns High Ranking Among U.S. Airports

July 19, 2017

Readers of Travel + Leisure Magazine rank the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) second to one among domestic airports in the United States.

In Travel + Leisure Magazine’s annual World’s Best Awards for 2017, the Indy airport took the second-place spot among the U.S. top 10 airports for another consecutive year.

Travelers were asked to rate airports across the world on a variety of services including access, check-in, security, restaurants, bars, shopping and design.

“When travelers are happy, we’re happy,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority. “Customer feedback is our most important metric, and awards like this affirm what we’re doing right and give us some good insights how to keep growing that customer satisfaction.”

Travelers rated airports on levels of access and security, two areas of criteria the Indy airport prioritizes. Passengers can use the shortest security-screening line and still access their airline gate in the designated concourse. The concourses also were designed to be wide open, allowing passengers room to move about freely when traveling to and from gates, shops and restaurants.

In addition, the airport added more than 300 charging stations in 2016 throughout the airport for travelers’ convenience, and installed two children’s play areas and water bottle filling stations for added passenger amenities.

Reader input was collected via an online survey at http://tlworldsbest.com from Nov. 7, 2016 to March 6, 2017. Respondents were asked to share their travel experiences by rating airlines, airports, car-rental agencies, cities, cruise ships, destination spas, hotels, hotel brands, islands, tour operators, and safari outfitters on a number of characteristics. Ratings were based on a scale of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. A minimum number of responses was necessary to be eligible in the World’s Best Awards rankings.

“Safest, cleanest, and most beautiful airport in the country,” one reader said of Indianapolis. “Has wonderful shopping and local restaurants that cater to everyone, but provide the traveling public with a little taste of Indy!”
