Kansas City International Airport Passenger Traffic Increases 2% in May

The city of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that 1,063,341 passengers arrived and departed through Kansas City International Airport’s gates in May, a 2.4 percent increase from May 2017. Passenger boardings were up 2.7 percent, with a total of 545,178 boarded. For the year to date, total passengers in and out total 4,607,123, up 2 percent. Year-to-date passenger boardings are 2,317,281, up 2.1 percent.

“Last month’s traffic growth reflects the Kansas City-region’s strong desire for convenient and affordable air travel,” said Pat Klein, director of aviation. “We were pleased to welcome our newest airline partner, Icelandair, in May when they launched Kansas City’s first-ever transatlantic nonstop service.”

Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI were up 7.5 percent in May with a total of 18.1 million pounds handled. Year to date, 86 million pounds have been handled, up 3.4 percent. Air freight handled at KCI during May amounted to 17.5 million pounds, which represents a year-over-year increase of 9.3 percent. Year to date, air freight is up 4.2 percent with a total of 83 million pounds handled. Air mail for May was down 28.4 percent from May 2017 with 596,145 pounds handled. Air mail is down 13.6 percent year to date with 3.2 million pounds handled.

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for May 2018 was 176. Service was offered to 51 nonstop markets. There was an average of 41,879 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day. The all-cargo carriers reported 6 daily departures for May.
