Charlotte Aviation Department Receives Safety Award

Aug. 29, 2018

The NC Department of Labor has designated the Aviation Department a Public Sector Star recipient.

The Aviation Department is the first City of Charlotte Department and first airport operator in the country to hold such a distinction.

The Public Sector Star Program recognizes state agencies and local governments for their leadership and success in providing a safe and healthy work environment.

NC Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry made the official announcement Wednesday afternoon during a formal ceremony at the CLT Center. “Being a Carolina Star shows the community that you are committed to a safe work environment,” Berry said. “I applaud the efforts of everyone involved at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in accomplishing this goal and am delighted to recognize those efforts.”

The Star designation aligns with a core Aviation Department strategic principle – Safety and Security. The Airport’s Safety Program is based on three safety keys: effective programming, training and education and 100 percent buy-in.

“We are extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said Aviation Director/ CEO of Charlotte Douglas International Airport Brent Cagle. “Aviation Department staff worked tirelessly to achieve the Star designation. Through Star we have experienced a safety culture shift. Our employees now have a keen sense of awareness to safety and health in their daily work environment.”

Requirements of the Star Program included submitting Aviation Department safety and health policies, procedures and programs, inspections of worksites, a three year review of employee injury and illness rates and an assessment of employee training opportunities.

NC Department of Labor staff was on site in May and June to score the Aviation Department in various safety and health categories. The Department’s final scores amounted to 148 and 142 points out of a maximum score of 150 points. Click here for more information about the Star Program.
