Southwest to Expand Hawaii Service at Oakland AIrport
Southwest Airlines has announced that beginning Jan. 2020, the airline will add two new long-haul destinations at Oakland International Airport (OAK) – Lihue, Kauai Island and Kona on the Island of Hawaii.
Service to Kona (KOA) will operate four times weekly on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. Service to Lihue (LIH) is scheduled to operate three times weekly, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis, said, “OAK is incredibly pleased to join our partners at Southwest in offering this expanded service to the Hawaiian Islands. As the very first mainland airport to offer Southwest’s service to Hawaii, each evolution of this long-awaited service is a value added for our customers.”
In Oct. 2017, Southwest shared an intention to begin the technical work to bring capabilities for Hawaii service, applied with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Jan. 2018, and publicly announced the carrier's initial gateway airports and initial Hawaii airports in spring 2018.
