Skyxe Saskatoon Airport (Skyxe) has been recognized by Airports Council International for achieving Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 1: Mapping. The Airport Carbon Accreditation program provides a unique common framework and tool for active carbon management at airports with measurable results. The program covers the operational activities that contribute most to carbon emissions and helps guide and support airport environmental management through a process of continual improvement and partnership with its airport stakeholders.
The Level 1 Mapping Accreditation is the first of four steps of the program, with the end goal of being carbon neutral. Level 1 involves determining emissions sources within the operational boundary of the airport community, calculating the annual carbon emissions and compiling a carbon footprint report. This information is verified by a third-party and acts as a benchmarking tool for improvement.
“Sustainability is important to Skyxe” says Andrew Leeming, vice president of operational excellence at Skyxe Saskatoon Airport. “For the past several years we have been diligently tracking and documenting our energy usage and our carbon footprint and this Level 1 Mapping accreditation supports our environmental objectives. We continue to assess initiatives, working to meet our goal to reduce per passenger carbon emissions by 20 percent from our 2015 benchmark year by 2023.”
Skyxe has implemented several carbon management actions already including a solar power installation, replacement to high efficiency boilers that heat the terminal, building automation systems, and the installation of LED light fixtures throughout the airport campus.
