Denver International Airport (DEN) awarded HNTB a contract extension for work on the $560 million Concourse Renewal Program, which has been added to the airport’s existing $1.5 billion Concourse Expansion Program (CEP). The increased construction budget will allow work to be accelerated during the reduction in travel due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In 2018, HNTB was awarded the original contract by DEN to support the Gate Expansion Project through architectural and design services. The project constructs 39 gates across all three concourses, a 30 percent increase capacity. HNTB is providing design services for 16 new gates.
“The Concourse Renewal Program will refresh and renew the existing concourse areas that are not part of the original CEP and may include upgrading holdrooms, restrooms and public circulation areas,” said Julie Wienberg, HNTB aviation architecture practice leader, national consultant and vice president. “The current reduction in air travel provides an opportunity for the airport and its consultants’ to accelerate planned refurbishment work on the concourses for efficiency.”
According to HNTB Project Manager Scott Steckler, the scope of work may include new wayfinding signage throughout the existing concourses; new flooring, ceilings and walls in the holdrooms and common walkway areas; replacement of existing seating in the hold room areas with new power seating; and renovation of existing public restrooms. The new gates will be completed by the end of 2021 and operational in 2022. Depending on traffic levels and airline operations, the concourse renewal project could be complete as early as 2024.
HNTB ranks No. 3 in Airports in Engineering News-Record’s most recent Top Design Firms Sourcebook.
