AZO Statement on American Airlines Suspension of Service During Month of October

Aug. 20, 2020

On Aug. 20, American Airlines announced their plan to suspend service at AZO from Oct. 7 through Nov. 3.  In a press release American stated the reason as “low demand and the expiration of the air service requirements associated with the CARES Act.”

In a phone call American assured the airport that the move is temporary as they continue to evaluate markets on a monthly basis. “the impact of COVID-19 on air service to small communities continues. AZO is very much a business focused market. It will take the confident return to normal operations by the area’s business community to fully recover. The move by American is disappointing, but we are confident of their commitment to AZO and their return in November,” said Craig Williams, Airport Director.

In July, American carried 2,213 passengers on aircraft that were 58 percent filled. Passenger numbers were down 63.4 percent from 2019 numbers.
