Oakland International Airport Reports August Passenger Traffic
August passenger traffic at Oakland International Airport (OAK) decreased 8.4% from what was reported for July. In fact, 28,535 fewer passengers departed from OAK than did in July.
“Encouraging June to July growth was dampened as cases of COVID-19 increased during August,” says Bryant L. Francis, Port of Oakland director of aviation. “Also, the postponement of the State of Hawaii’s planned pre-travel COVID-19 testing program resulted in a reduction in service to the Hawaiian Islands with just two of up to eight scheduled daily flights operating during what would have been a peak month.” Throughout the pandemic, Southwest Airlines has continued to operate twice-daily service from OAK to Honolulu, Oahu for those with an urgent, essential need to travel and enabling the shipment of essential cargo.
The airport and all air carriers operating within require that everyone wear a mask while at the airport and aboard aircraft. Wearing a mask contributes to reduced risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus.
August statistical data
- OAK saw 313,296 total passengers in August, down 73.7% from August 2019 with 1,189,199 passengers.
- In August, a total of 155,488 passengers departed OAK’s runways on scheduled flights; 129,065 local and 26,423 connecting passengers. Of those, 8,284 were international passengers.
- On a rolling 12-month basis, traffic is off 42.4% with 7,726,400 passengers this year compared to 13,417,783 during the same period a year ago.
- Airlines at OAK offered nonstop service to 41 destinations in August, up two from July. During August, air service was restored to Bellingham, Washington by Allegiant Air and Reno-Tahoe, Nevada by Southwest Airlines.
