New United, American Flights Leave Out of Indy to Ft. Myers, Cancun This Week

Dec. 16, 2020

Hoosiers looking for tropical temperatures and sandy beaches can make their sun-loving dreams come true starting this week with two new nonstop flights leaving out of the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) for Ft. Myers and Cancun.

For those travelers looking for a warm domestic destination to social distance on the beach through the holidays, United Airlines will launch its inaugural daily nonstop flight out of Indianapolis to Ft. Myers on Dec. 17 at 11:45 a.m. Southwest Florida International Airport in Ft. Myers is just a short drive away from some of Florida’s top destinations like Naples and Marco Island.

Travelers looking for an international experience can take off on American Airlines’ inaugural nonstop flight to Cancun on Dec. 19 at 11:18 a.m., and enjoy the warm waters and tropical breezes of the Gulf of Mexico combined with the architectural and cultural marvels of the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Both United and American have adjusted some of their flight options to meet the preferences of current travelers, and those preferences include point-to-point non-hub destinations that offer warm temperatures for the spirit, and room to spread out on sandy beaches,” said Marsha Stone, Indianapolis Airport Authority senior director of commercial enterprise.

Saturday’s nonstop flight will mark the first American Airlines flight out of Indianapolis to serve Cancun. Currently Southwest and Frontier airlines offer a nonstop flight from Indy to Cancun. The United flight on Thursday is the airline’s first nonstop to serve Ft. Myers out of Indianapolis. Currently Spirit and Southwest airlines fly nonstop out of Indianapolis to Ft. Myers.

Have a Safe and Healthy Flight

United and American are making their flights as clean and safe as possible during the current global health crisis, striving to ensure passenger confidence. Both airlines require passengers to complete a health assessment before boarding and to wear face coverings, in addition to using electro-static disinfecting throughout aircraft cabins as well as HEPA air systems that filter out 99.9% of airborne particles.

Since March, the Indianapolis Airport Authority has implemented an abundance of measures throughout the terminal and airport campus in response to the pandemic, such as installing "Be KIND, stay six feet behind" signage to guide passengers in social distancing, providing additional hand sanitizing stations for customer convenience, erecting Plexiglass shields in high-traffic areas, increasing cleaning frequency in high-congregation areas, deep cleaning public restrooms hourly using hospital-grade disinfectant, increasing cleaning and sanitization of shuttle buses, and implementing touchless payment procedures wherever possible. In addition, the airport follows Marion County Public Health Department’s guidance, including requiring workers, passengers, and visitors to wear face coverings or masks.
